Sport Education: net team sports

3ºA has started to improve a kind of sport: «net team sport», the one which divides the field in two similar spaces and where the players have no contact to defend and attack.

We are learning this kind of sport through tactics, a way of improving our game-intelligence; we now know that the brain should be ON when playing these sports because we need to pay attention to a lot of stimulus and to make quick decisions in order to help our team.

That way, we set smart and tactic outcomes, useful for a lot of sports. Technique (how well we perform the movement of throwing, passing, feinting, serving…) will be improved little by little when we accumulate game situations. It is now crystal clear that improvement will arrive sooner if we use more balls in little groups, because we will touch the ball more times to practice more intensively.

4 balanced-in-level teams are working (people who have played more times with people who have only watch this kind of sport on TV; people who play easily with those who need more days to improve). Each team is been trained by a «coach» with an assistant (both also play with their players). The coaches, due to their experience on this kind of sport, are helping us to improve the tactic outcomes by preparing the workouts (training sessions), assessing and giving us advice to learn even more things. We will adapt our learning process according to The Sport Education Model.

The first sport we are playing is volleyball. After the warm-up (led by physical coaches based on volleyball warm-up videos), each team trains with his coach. The coaches agree on distributing the spaces in the field for the session before it starts. They can also decide to play a match with other team for the last 10 minutes of the training time, as long as the score system is based on the session outcomes (p.e.: if today’s outcome is to control the reception by an autopass, every time this happens during the match, the player’s team will score extra points apart from the traditional score. That way, you won’t only score when achieving the ball to touch the opposite floor, but when working the outcomes we are training). Important: no more than 3 people in each team when playing a match.

At the end of the session, every player meets his team to comment the training: the coach gives props to their teammates to congrat their effort and improvement, points out the improvable aspects to take into account for the next day and informs about next outcomes. At the same time, players share their feelings during the session: what we have learnt and enjoyed, what they need to improve, the exercises they can brainstorm for the next day…

After the team meeting, the global meeting comes. Every coach tells us who his/her MVP (most valuable player because of the effort, improvement, help to others…) is. We congrat them with an applause and pick the materials up.

The coaches will track their players’ improvement according to the outcomes. The outcomes for first phase are:
